And the latter was excellently written! The authors do just about as good a job writing a novella as they do a full-length novel. It's packed with plenty of intrigue and drama to keep you interested! Characters: I'll admit, reading this story felt a bit jarring the first time — most likely because there are virtually no characters from the "Dawn of the Clans" arc. Not that that's a bad thing — I guess I was more used to that cast than I thought, which leads me to another reason I read it a second time.

I was having to get behind the new cats and try to figure out how much time had passed — and the latter can be a bit distracting if you're reading the series in chronological order like me.

Timeline issues aside, I really did like these new characters, which once again goes to show how much skill these writers possess. And if my calculations are correct, I estimate that around twenty years have passed — which would probably feel like two-hundred years or so for these cats.

Cloudstar: It's kind of amazing how much this character won me over in one novella. I was totally invested in Cloudstar's titular journey — which, by the way, reads not so much like a long physical trek but rather a more personal journey in himself, the way he and his beliefs change throughout the course of the story.

And to draw a reference from the Bible, Cloudstar feels a lot like Job. His transformation from a young but confident leader to a bitter cat who feels like he's prematurely aged is genuinely heartbreaking.

It's certainly clear how devoted he is to his Clan. Even so, he ends up pushing both them and himself to their absolute limits — and arguably past them. Yet in the end, he still loses everyone and everything he cares about — including his belief in StarClan. It made me wish he could see the bigger picture — that SkyClan does eventually come back, that StarClan has always cared about them and always will.

Moving on though, while the book never says this, I wouldn't be surprised if Cloudstar was a direct descendant of Skystar — given he has plenty of his personality traits.

Readers of Battles of the Clans will recognize the next scene, as the guidebook had two stories about the aftermath of this battle one from the point of view of each Clan : Cloudstar speaks to his Clan, telling them that they must want victory more than ThunderClan in order to win, and that night he is awakened by Fawnstep, who has had a dream about SkyClan leaving the forest.

Cloudstar is dismayed but does not say anything, and Fawnstep says that this is a defeat they can't survive. Within a quarter moon, Birdflight has her kits. Cloudstar goes for a walk, happy about his kits but extremely worried and desperate for their future. He walks to the edge of the Twoleg devastation, and falls asleep. He finds himself in StarClan, but there are no cats around; he calls out that they're cowards and challenges them to tell him now that SkyClan is safe, and then begs them to let him know they haven't given up on his Clan.

None of them appear. A monster drives by and wakes him up, and he finds that an elder, Starlingfeather, is nearby. Starlingfeather tells him that there can be nobility in admitting defeat.
