Depends on the height of the sofa and sofa table. And whether the lamps are decorative or for reading. I don't personally like them like the Montage deer valley photo where the lamp shade is just barely clearing the sofa like that because it will spot in your eye when you lay back.
I think the bottom of the lamp shade has to be at least " over your head when seated. Which of course depends on your height, etc. My advice to you if you don't have a designer, is to get different height lamps and try the out on your table and see what type of lighting you can tolerate. Then buy a lamp at that height.
